My work with Modest was based in developing everyday products with communities of makers abroad who wish to develop their design, craft and marketing skills through localized production. Using indigenous crafting techniques and local plant-based resources cultivated in agro-ecological systems or reforestation scenarios we were able to build products and catalogues that introduced these makers to western buyers.
My projects with Modest spanned in materiality from softgoods using felt to hardgoods using pine and natural resins. Combining my knowledge of materiality with the handcraft expertise of the makers we were working with yielded products for the home that came from renewable, small scale resources. The projects I was primarily involved with are La Yeguada, Zero Waste, and Changing Livelihoods.
